2020 ICD-10 code changes become effective on October 1, 2019

Are you ready?

Starting on October 1, 2019, the 2020 ICD-10 code changes will take effect. There will be 72,184 total codes including 273 new and 21 deleted codes that must be mastered if providers want to avoid denied claims and delayed payments.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has provided a document with tables summarizing these code changes. Each table details the old ICD-10 codes as well as the updated codes that will be replacing them.

Through EHNAC’s comprehensive third-party review and onsite audit, it was determined that Glenwood’s process of managing and transferring protected health information met or exceeded EHNAC’s criteria and industry standards.

GlaceEMR has already been configured for the 2020 ICD-10 updates and the new codes will be available for use beginning October 1st. The system will not allow you to enter or submit any outdated codes; instead GlaceEMR will suggest the new, updated code(s) that should be used in place of the old code(s).

What's new at Glenwood?

Glenwood continuously works to improve our software and provide our users with the most efficient features. The third quarter of 2019 has seen several notable changes that we hope will continue to simplify your workflow.

EMR update - changes to group therapy management, progress notes & Medi-Span drug database

Group therapy management

Glenwood has included new features related to Group Therapy Management for Behavioral Health practices. Users may now select from the following options when documenting group therapy details for patients:

  • Add new groups
  • Add new patients to group
  • Add new session
  • Document one therapy note for all the patients in a group
  • Bill automatically based on the time spent by patients in a session

Progress notes

Enhancements have been made to the user interface section of the Progress Notes to utilize the wide screen monitors. Users can now view the notes summary on the right side of the screen while simultaneously completing documentation on the left side.

Medi-Span

Glenwood is currently in the process of implementing a new and improved drug database from Medi-Span. We anticipate the new database will be available at the end of 2019.

Billing update - ADT & DFT bridges

We have been updating our billing interface to add ADT and DFT bridges. This will allow users to receive patient admission, discharge and charge information from various hospital systems. Messages received through the bridges may also include things like ancillary charges or patient deposits.

Information is transferred to GlaceEMR from the hospital system via trigger events. It can be very useful for a provider to see a patient in the hospital but have the billing be funneled through GlaceEMR without having to retype the patient's information.

ADT bridge

ADT (Admission Discharge Transfer) messages are typically initiated by the Hospital Information System (HIS), or a registration application, to inform ancillary systems that a patient has been admitted, discharged, transferred, merged, that other demographic data about the patient has changed (name, insurance, next of kin, etc.) or that some visit information has changed (patient location, attending doctor, etc.).

DFT bridge

DFT (Detailed Financial Transactions) messages describe a financial transaction that is sent to a billing system from a Hospital Information System (HIS) to inform ancillary systems that a patient is used for patient accounting purposes. The message might include things like ancillary charges or patient deposits.
